“Autism and Deafness or Deafness and Autism?”

The teaching methods used in the field of Autism often need to be adapted to fully meet the needs of the Deaf student with Autism. The presenter will share how she has made these adaptations in her classroom as well as discuss important considerations when diagnosing Deaf students with Autism.

Here's what will be covered:

  • The importance of assessing a student’s vision before qualifying that student as having Autism.
  • Why there are questions and concerns with diagnosing a student who has CHARGE as having Autism.
  • Ways to modify/adapt techniques/methods (PECS, Social Stories, Power Cards, etc) used in the field of Autism to a Deaf student who has a diagnosis of Autism.
  • Possible reasons for labeling a Deaf student with Autism on his/her IEP as Deafness being the primary disability and Autism as the secondary disability (or as Autism being the primary disability and Deafness as the secondary disability).

THIS TRAINING IS INCLUDED FREE IN THE PROFESSIONAL ACADEMY
